Through extensive experience delivering development programs in international markets, AFI has recognised that the traditional 18-a-side game provides significant participation barriers to entry outside of Australia.
These include a lack of access to suitably sized fields, significant infrastructure in the form of goal & behind posts and line marking, and the number of players required to field two teams.
As a result a new sport, Footy 9s, has been created by AFI to allow Australian Football to be played on smaller playing fields, without losing any of the fun or excitement associated with the traditional game.
AFI strongly believes that Footy 9s has huge potential to become a truly international sport. Indeed, one of our major aims is the eventual inclusion of Footy 9s in the Olympic Games.
