SOUTH AFRICAN COMMUNITY IN AUSTRALIA
In February 2019 the South Africa Lions competed at the inaugural World 9s in Melbourne.

The team consisted of South African expats who have moved to Australia and subsequently discovered the game.

The Lions have built up a great culture and now compete in the World 9s on an annual basis.

According to the Australian Census, 189,000 Australians were born in South Africa, while 145,683 residents claimed South African ancestry.

Not enough has been done in the past to engage the South African community in Australia.

AFI is keen to work with the South African community and build strong people-to-people links. These will be vital in helping to grow the game in South Africa.
